In the Community
Through our collaborative research, field experiences, program development, and community engagement, grounded in Baltimore but extending to other urban communities in Maryland, our vision is to work collaboratively to ensure equity in schools in urban communities.
Loyola’s School of Education strives to contribute to the critical conversations on education in urban areas, and to offer a variety of events for university and local community members.
Recent lectures include:
- Dr. Adrienne Dixon, Associate Professor of Critical Race Theory, and Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Kellner Family Endowed Professor in Urban Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
- Dr. Jason Irizarry, Director of Urban Education and an Associate Professor in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst
- Dr. David Stovall, Associate Professor of Educational Policy Studies and African-American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)

Annual Professional Development
The Loyola School of Education provides a variety of professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators in Archdiocese Community Schools. Recent examples include: Integrating STEM into the Curriculum, Destination Imagination, Teaching Strategies for English Language Learners, and Formative Assessment.
Learning and Leading by Design Workshop
This professional development program is designed to support Archdiocese teachers’ and school leaders’ capacity to build authentic, professional learning relationships and to create transformed opportunities for deep student learning. The program currently includes two schools: Immaculate Conception and Cathedral of Mary our Queen. The program is focused on two integrated constructs: Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and Understanding by Design (UbD). By integrating these two concepts into a two-year learning process, school principals and teachers become deeply involved in building collaborative and supportive structures both within their own school and in collaboration with other participating schools within the Archdiocese.
Faculty from Loyola have been working with administrators and faculty leaders on design and implementation of school-based improvement plans that both meet the strategic goals of the Archdiocese schools as well as attend to the specific learning contexts of each school.
Understanding the importance of rich, active experiences with learners, our students have intense field experiences and internships in a variety of schools in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Our goal is to prepare our teachers to specifically meet the needs of all students in today’s urban classrooms.

Center for Equity, Leadership, and Social Justice Education
The Center for Equity, Leadership, and Social Justice Education at Loyola University Maryland’s School of Education will bring faculty, students, and Loyola alumni funding assistance for engaged research through grants and administrative/research assistance, provide a collaborative platform and space to the community, an opportunity for attracting larger funding sources, and offer exposure and promotion of impactful work in the area of equity, leadership, and social justice education.

Summer Reading Institute
The School of Education partners with the Institute of Reading Development to offer eight different reading and skill programs for children and adults.

Student Engagement “In the Community”
Education Society is a student-led organization for all education students interested in service, leadership, and advocacy. Education Ambassadors assist with open houses and other campus activities to promote teacher education programs. They host engaging, informational meetings with guest speakers and participate in service projects in the community. Ed Society participates in CCSJ’s “Presence for Christmas” by collecting gifts for children in a local partner school. They also organize school supply and winter coat drives to help meet the needs of children in our partner schools.
Advocates for Inclusion
Advocates for Inclusion is a student-led organization that promotes acceptance and inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In addition to promoting awareness, they volunteer at and help organize events for exceptional individuals, including Trunk-or-Treat and Holiday Photos at schools and in the community.
