Master of Theological Studies

The Loyola University Maryland Master of Theological Studies is a rigorous, 48 credit, graduate-level program designed to give students both a broad exposure to the Christian tradition and a variety of theological specialties and to allow students to explore a topic in-depth through the preparation of a thesis. The Master of Theological Studies is excellent preparation for work in fields such as non-profits, social justice, lay ministry, education, library science, social work, law, or publishing.  The Master of Theological Studies - Research Track is designed for students who intend to pursue doctoral work and includes more research languages and a research-intensive thesis. Regardless of the path, Loyola Master of Theological Studies students graduate well-read, well-rounded, and ready for what’s next.

Master of Theological Studies

The Master of Theological Studies is a 48-credit graduate-level degree with a highly flexible curriculum in order to meet students’ the various professional and education goals. The curriculum includes seven core theology course, five electives, two language courses, Doing Lived Theology, and a thesis. By equipping students to explore the world of theology, they can find the path that best fits their goals.

Master of Theological Studies - Research Track

The Research track is a 48-credit graduate-level degree that is designed specifically for students who intend on pursuing doctoral-level work upon completing the program. To best prepare students for doctoral work, the Master of Theological Studies - Research Track places a stronger emphasis on developing skills in theology research languages and research methods. As such, the MTS - Research Tack curriculum includes seven core theology courses, four language course, three electives, and a two semester thesis project.

Program Format

Both tracks are available to full-time or part-time students. Full-time students may complete the program in as little as two years. Part-time students typically complete the program in three to four years but may take up to six years to complete the program. Below is the typical course sequence for a student enrolled full-time.

Faculty and Learning Environment

Students learn from internationally recognized, tenured faculty known for their scholarly work and publications. The department includes Catholic and non-Catholic faculty who together nurture a collegial atmosphere and student success. Graduate-level students in the Master of Theological Studies and the Certificate in Theology and Ministry also experience a 2:1 student to faculty ratio, which provides a collaborative atmosphere.
