Facilities Management and Maintenance

The University’s facilities department is preparing all campus spaces for the reopening of campus and welcoming students, faculty and staff back to campus. These strategies include HVAC building modifications; cleaning protocols; hand sanitizers and disinfecting spray or wipes; minimizing the use of shared equipment, signage, and furniture layout.

Keeping the Campus Healthy

  • Hand sanitizer will be widely available at stations across Loyola’s campuses.
  • Shared bathrooms will be cleaned and disinfected frequently throughout the day.
  • Signage throughout the campuses will encourage proper/frequent handwashing.
  • Facilities is implementing cleaning protocols of shuttles, classrooms, offices, bathrooms, residence halls, and other shared spaces. Electrostatic sprayers with Bio-Protect, an EPA-registered product, will be used to sanitize many campus spaces to reduce the risk of the virus being transmitted from touching surfaces in these spaces.
  • Facilities will provide students with a guide on how to clean and disinfect their living spaces and the products they should bring for cleaning.
  • Water fountains will be turned off. Refillable water bottle stations will remain in operation.
  • All high-contact surfaces and touch points will be cleaned, followed by the use of an EPA-registered disinfectant to sanitize surfaces, fixtures, and touch points in heavy utilized areas, common spaces, restrooms, lounges, kitchenettes, classrooms, and labs.
  • In incidents of confirmed cases, a certified commercial vendor may be contacted to respond to ensure compliance with CDC guidelines.

Plexiglass and other barriers

These will be placed in locations where adequate physical distancing isn’t possible, including transaction counters, dining serving areas, and administrative/reception areas where necessary.

HVAC Building Modifications

  • Where possible, the University will modify building operating systems to increase both the amount of outside air and the number of air changes to the extent the building system allows.
  • Where feasible, the University is installing Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) Devices in air handling units, ductwork, upper room (near ceiling) and portable units. These devices may help disinfect contaminants caused by coronavirus and other infectious diseases.
  • The University has many buildings with other types of systems. In these areas, other alternatives such as high-efficiency air filtration, portable air purifiers, and other standalone units for air purification are being considered. More frequent filter changes and preventive maintenance are planned for all buildings.

Waste/Recycling Collection

Facilities Management is working to increase the efficiency of cleaning operations and reduce the number of touch points in offices and classrooms across campus. Environmental Services staff will be increasing sanitizing touch points across campus (e.g. door handles, railings, elevator buttons, furniture, etc.) and the servicing of both common and public area restrooms and other high touch spaces (e.g. locker rooms, classrooms, labs, etc.).
