FAQs about the TELL Certificate
How many credits is the Teaching English Language Learner Certificate?
The Teaching English Language Learners (TELL) certificate is a 15 credit program. There are five (5) three (3) credit courses. Three courses meet in person and two courses are fully online.
Can the courses in the TELL Certificate be applied to a Master’s program?
Yes, one course can be applied to the Reading Specialist or Literacy Teacher programs. Upon completion, students may transfer the 15 credits into Loyola's M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction - Teaching English Language Learners.
How long will it take to complete the entire certificate?
The certificate can be completed within one (1) year. The participant will need to complete one (1) course in the summer, two (2) courses in the fall, and two (2) courses in the spring. During fall and spring semesters, students will take two eight week courses allowing the student to focus on one course at a time. During the fall and spring semesters, students will take one in person course and one fully online course.
Will the TELL Certificate program certify me to teach ESOL? Will I need to complete the Praxis?
The TELL certificate does not lead to ESOL certification. After completing the TELL, an individual with Maryland teaching certification can seek additional ESOL endorsement by passing the Praxis II #5361 exam.
What is the tuition cost? Are payment plans available? Is financial aid available?
Loyola University Maryland School of Education 2016-17 tuition rate is $550 per credit. Loyola does offer payment plans. Yes, financial aid is available for the TELL certificate. Participants will be required to take a minimum of one (1) course in the summer and two (2) courses in the fall and spring to be eligible for financial aid. Additionally, school system employees should contact their human resources office regarding tuition reimbursement.
Does this program require applicants to have initial certification?
It is not necessary for students to possess initial teacher certification. This program is designed for all professionals. This program is also not limited to school based employees. How do I register for the program?
You will need to complete the online application. We require official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended. We also require one letter of recommendation. The resume is optional, however, recommended.
