With visionary leadership and synergy with the ideals of Loyola University Maryland and its School of Education, the Center for Innovation in Urban Education (CIUE) strives to participate in local and national conversations about urban education. Faculty and staff employ the principles inherent in cura personalis, caring for the whole person, in the development of transformational educators who will learn, lead, and serve in the diverse and changing community of Baltimore, the state, the nation, and the world.
Through our collaborative research, program development, and community engagement, grounded in Baltimore, but extending to other urban communities in the United States, our vision is to work collaboratively to ensure equity in schools in urban communities. Community partners assist by funding research projects with specific, practical goals regarding K-12 education in urban environments. As well, the CIUE has collaborated with Baltimore organizations such as Wide Angle Youth Media, the Baltimore Curriculum Project, and the Enoch Pratt Free Library for panel discussions and film screenings.
